Experienced divers will love exploring this century old shipwreck and the amazing array of marine life. Sea snakes, moray eels, eagle rays and manta rays are all seen in large numbers. Big schools of various tropical fish also call the Yongala home. The S.S. Yongala sank during a cyclone in 1911. While the S.S. Yongala is considered one of Australia’s worst maritime disasters, it is now regarded as Australia’s best dive site and has often been referred to as “Townsville’s Titanic” The Wreck begins 15m below the surface and extends to 29m below. Marine life tends to gather at the wreck as it’s the only structure in the area. The wreck was first dived in 1958, and due to its remote location remains remarkably intact and untouched. This dive trip is for certified divers only. Dive guides are highly recommended and are compulsory for divers with less than 15 logged dives.
